Everything started with a simple idea: to create our own windsurf sails. Flight Sails was born in 2014 in El Médano, Tenerife, founded by three windsurfing enthusiasts: Bart David, Bjorn de Vos, and José Fernández.
Like many great stories, it all began over a few beers at La Jaquita chiringuito. Between conversations about the wind, waves, and the gear we were using, the question came up: what if we could make our own sails? It wasn’t just a dream—we wanted to experiment, try out ideas, and see how far we could go designing something from scratch.
The Early Days: From Riders to Designers
Without a big business plan or a structured setup, we started working on the first prototypes. We designed, tweaked, and went out on the water to test, always looking for the perfect balance of performance, ease of use, and durability.
Testing sessions at El Médano gave us the real-world feedback we needed to refine each version. It was a continuous learning process where every little detail made a difference.
The Evolution: From a Hobby to a Factory
As our designs improved, more riders became interested in our sails. Their feedback was key to fine-tuning each model. What started as a project among friends quickly turned into something bigger, and we knew it was time to take the next step.
To produce sails with the high-quality standards we aimed for, we decided to manufacture in Sri Lanka, at one of the world’s most recognized sail production facilities. This allowed us to maintain complete control over the design without compromising production quality.
Our Philosophy: Keep Learning and Evolving
From day one, we’ve held onto one guiding principle: never stop learning. Every new sail is the result of hours of testing, fine-tuning, and improvements. We don’t follow trends just for the sake of it—every change in a design has a clear purpose.
Today, our sails are used by riders around the world, yet we remain true to the same spirit that started it all: creating products that truly make a difference on the water.
If you’ve read this far, it means we share the same passion for windsurfing. Thank you for being part of our story.
